RESERVE – Riverside, coming off a Homecoming victory against Varnado, will step up in classification this week when it hosts Vandebilt Catholic.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.Vandebilt, a member of District 9-4A, comes into the game with a 2-1 record. Riverside also comes in with a 2-1 record.Riverside got back on track Friday after a loss to University the week before, defeating Varnado 40-22.

The Rebel offense consistently moved the ball, scoring on their first two plays of the game. Casey Remondet dashed 69 yards on the Rebels’ firstplay from scrimmage and Britt Waguespack followed with a 17-yard run, his fifth touchdown of the season. Joey Poirrier added a 20-yard scoringstrike to Remondet. Brad Delaneuville and Poirrier would later contributescoring runs.

Riverside would amass 398 yards in total offense with 292 yards coming on the ground. The defense recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass.The Terriers are an experienced team, returning eight starters from a 4-6 team in 1997. Quint Schexnayder, one of the top players in District 9-4A,returns at quarterback after going over the 1,000-yard mark in both rushing and passing last season. Vandebilt’s strong point is its line play,where four seniors start on offense and three return on defense. CharlesKornegay and Dustin Malbrough lead the defensive line.

That defense shut down Berwick last Friday, allowing only 147 total yards in a 32-0 victory. The Terriers rolled up 287 yards in total offense,including 226 yards on the ground.

The Rebels were in a dogfight with the Terriers last year, coming away with a last-minute 17-14 victory. John Rylee provided the winning pointswith just over a minute left. The Rebel defense snuffed out the followingTerrier drive to preserve the victory. Remondet provided both of thetouchdowns for the Rebels.

Riverside will have its final tuneup for District 9-2A play next Friday at home against Parkview Baptist. Vandebilt Catholic hosts ArchbishopHannan, ranked seventh in Class 4A.
