LAPLACE – Pre-registration for pet entries in the Sept. 19 pet show at St.John Theatre ended Friday, but registration will commence at the door at 5 p.m. the day of the competition.Any pet may enter the event which will consist of 16 categories ranging from “Most Unusual” to several “Best Looking” awards for various animal species. Other categories include: largest pet, tiniest pet, best trick, bestobedience, greenest pet, pet/owner look-alike, best dressed pet, most photogenic, longest pet and best singer.

The program was initiated by Angela Zorn, an employee at the St. JohnHumane Society, who intends to raise money for food, medical bills and maintenance at the shelter.

“There’s a lot we’d like to change here, but that all depends on how much money we make,” Zorn said. “Right now we’re focusing on our immediateneeds.”All types of pets are welcome to participate in the competition, and certain guidelines will apply. Dog, cat and ferret owners must be able toprovide proof of current rabies vaccination, and owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. All pets must be restrained by leash, carrieror cage.

Pre-registration entitles participants to a discounted entry fee of $3 per category, and there will be a $4 charge per category at the door for entries not pre-registered. There is no limit to the number of categoriesentered by each contestant.

There will be one free admission with each pet entered in the event.

General public admission tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Pre-registered pet owners and those wishing to register at thedoor may arrive at 5 p.m. General public will be admitted at 6:30 p.m., andseating is on a first come, first seated basis.

Proceeds from the pet show will benefit both the St. John Humane Societyand St. John Theatre.”So far, we’ve been getting a good response,” Zorn said. “It might not beas big as in years to come, but this is something we’d like to do again.”
