Godchaux dance held to cure those back to school blues

RESERVE – In order to cure some of those back to school blues, teachers at Leon Godchaux Junior High hosted an afternoon dance social to recharge students for the start of another school year.
Kelli Winzer, the cheerleading team sponsor and teacher of social studies and math at Godchaux, coordinated the event with the assistance of other administrative personnel and area businesses. Her goal was to energizestudents for the new school year.
“When they came in the first few days of school, they looked so drained and not excited about starting school,” Winzer said. “I thought they wouldenjoy this.”While listening to music provided by Fireball DJ service, the students were given the opportunity to relax amongst friends, indulge in cheesy nachos and other snacks and demonstrate their talents on the dance floor.
“I wanted them to have fun with music and friends at school,” Winzer said. “Those are the things the kids have in common – music and friends.”Raffles were held for a 35mm camera and a $25 school supplies giveaway, both were made available by Walmart. Other area business contributors tothe event included Winn Dixie, Weber’s and Popeye’s.
“These places donated a lot of the materials and refreshments, and they were such a big help,” Winzer said. A variety of food items, rulers, pencilsand stencils were some of the donations provided for the students.
While this was the first time Godchaux has held an event such as this, Principal Jacqueline Forest said it won’t be the last.
“I think it’s a good idea to have as many extra-curricular activities as possible to energize the students and for their growth and development,” Forest said. “We’ll definitely want to do this again.”Money collected from the raffle and dance admission fees will go toward the purchase of new uniforms and equipment for the Godchaux cheerleading squad. Winzer said the dance drew in close to $300.
