LUTCHER – East St. John played take-a-way Friday night, coming up with abig defensive plays on their way to a 19-13 opening night victory over the Lutcher Bulldogs.

The Wildcat defense took advantage of a Lutcher fumble in the second half to tie the score, then the Wildcats took their first lead after an interception. That score proved to be the difference in the game.It was a scoreless first quarter for Lutcher and East St. John. The Bulldogstraveled inside the Wildcat 20-yard line during the period, but they were unable to score as linebacker Deval Ceasar made two outstanding tackles for East St. John.With 8:41 left in the second quarter and the ball at the one-and-a-half yard line, the Bulldogs called time out before Damian Ursin broke loose inside the middle for a 2-yard touchdown.

East St. John threatened with 7:20 left as Floyd Smith hit Roydel Williamswith a 28-yard touchdown pass. However, the score was called back formovement on the front line.

With a minute left in the second quarter the Bulldogs scored on a 30-yard run by Damian Ursin to make it 13-0.

This time East St. John came back with a 50-yard touchdown pass fromSmith to Chris Bush with 1:10 remaining, making the score 13-7 Lutcher at the end of the first half.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to come storming back in the third as Edward Campbell returned a fumble 30 yards to the Bulldog 2-yard line.

The Wildcats then took it in on a 2-yard run by Samson Monica and tied the score at 13-13.

With 9:56 left in the third quarter the Wildcats stole a screen pass from Lutcher and brought the ball back to the Bulldog 1-yard line. With 8:54 leftin the third quarter Branden August went in from the 1 to give the Wildcats a 19-13 lead.

East St. John intercepted a Risely St. Germain pass and went 34 yards, butthe Wildcats were stopped.

With time running out East St. John faked a punt and took the ball to theLutcher 45, but three plays later Smith was sacked and time expired.
