An All-Star Baseball League is being formed in St. Charles Parish inthe following age groups: 10-11 year olds and 12-13 year olds. The six-team leagues being formed across the New Orleans area is to be played in St. Charles Parish. A seven-game Saturday schedule with a double elimination tournament with trophies for first and second place. The season will run from Sept. 26to Nov. 22. Registration and team fee is required. St. Charles Catholic Quarterback Club meetings will be held everyTuesday night in the school cafeteria through the end of the season.

The Chamber New Orleans & the River Regions is holding “The Big Swing Golf Tournament” Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Lakewood Country Club. There is a 11 a.m. check-in time and a 1 p.m. tee time. Contest and prizesinclude closest to the hole, longest drive, most accurate, longest putt and team gross and net score.

The Southeastern Louisiana University golf team is holding its 10th annual Fightin’ Lions scramble fundraiser Sept. 18 at Oak KnollCountry Club in Hammond.

The tournament tees off with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and the field islimited to the first 96 paid entrants.

The entry fee is $70 per person and includes greens fees, cart, gift pack, refreshments on the course, dinner following the tournament, door prizes and longest drive and closest to the pin contests.

Also, Dixie Motors is sponsoring a hole-in-one contest for a 1998 Nissan pick-up truck, and a silent auction for special golf items and golf packages will be held.

Golf packages will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams.

Lions head coach Tim Baldwin will introduce his defending Southland Conference championship squad for 1998-99.

The Realtors Classic 1 mile and 5K race will be held Sept. 19 tobenefit the Saints Board of Realtors Scholarship Fund.

Registration will be held at 5 p.m. and the one mile starts at 5:30 p.m.followed by the 5K at 6 p.m. at Belle Terre Boulevard at the Bank ofLaPlace. Walkers start one minute after runners in each race.Entry fees are as follows and are due by Sept. 6: student entry, $8;preregistration, $12; registration after Sept. 6, $14 (with no guarantee ofT-shirt); and non-participant, $10 (Realtors and affiliates only).

Commemorative race T-shirts will be given out the day of the race to all pre-registered entrants.

Refreshments will be served and door prizes given out on the day of the race.

The Kiwanis Club of Hammond is holding its Eighth Annual Tour de Tangipahoa Sept. 19.The event will feature 30 and 62-mile rides.

Cost of entry is $35. A free T-shirt will be given to all who ride.Refreshments, including sports juice, candy, fruit and water will be provided at numerous rest stops along the route. A free jambalaya lunchawaits riders at the conclusion of the tour. Police escorts, SAG wagonsand mechanical assistance will be provided to cyclists.

Check-in time for the tour will be at 7 a.m. in Historical DowntownHammond’s Cate Square. The St. Charles Catholic Athletic Association benefit dinner willbe held Sunday, September 20. Menu includes shrimp etouffe, vegetable,salad, bread and dessert.

Cost of the meal is $5 per plate (dine-in or carry-out). Meals will beserved between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at St. Charles Catholic’s Treasurer’s officeduring normal school hours or at any of the Quarterback Club meetings prior to Sept. 20.

The St. Peter School’s Fifth Annual Alumni and Friends GolfTournament will be held Monday, September 21 at Belle Terre Country Club.

Events include a four-man scramble tournament with a 1 p.m. shotgunstart, a putting contest and other activities, lunch with continuous beverage service and a meal with presentation of door prizes at the conclusion of the tournament.

The $100 participant entry fee includes all green fees, carts, lunch, unlimited beverages, dinner and chances for door prizes and awards.

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring hunter safetyclasses that are free of charge.

All classes will be held at the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office DivisionHeadquarters in LaPlace. Registration is required and you must attend eachday for certification. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is sponsoring a free Louisiana Boating Safety Course Sept. 23 and 24 at Hahnville HighSchool from 6-8:30 p.m. The course has been prepared by the LDWF to provide boaters with advice and information on safe and proper boat operation. By completing thecourse, boaters will improve their boating skills, become familiar with navigation rules and equipment and develop a positive attitude toward all water related activities as well as receiving a certificate to get a lower rate on their boat insurance. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is sponsoring free classes on Louisiana Wildlife Hunter Safety Eduaction and Firearm Safety Sept. 28-30 from 5-8:30 p.m.This program stresses hunter tradition and ethics, wildlife management and conservation, firearms and ammunition and firearm safety. The courseconsists of classroom instruction, a final exam and participation in a field exercise. The field exercise will be held off campus. Upon successful completion, students will be issued a permanent certification card and embroidered patch from the LDWF.

Students must attend all classes to receive certification. Materials andmanual will be provided free of charge but yellow highlighters, pens and paper must be brought to class (do not bring firearms to class).

The second annual Bayou Brigade benefiting Special Olympics Louisiana will be held Sunday, Oct. 4.The Bayou Brigade is a motorcycle run that starts in Alexandria, travels to Baton Rouge before moving on to Gretna and the ending site at the Gretna Heritage Festival.

Preregistration, which takes place Sept. 15, costs $20 per rider and $15per passenger. On-site registration costs $25 per rider and $20 perpassenger. A limited number of T-shirts featuring the Bayou Brigademascot “Roux de Gator” are available and will be included in the registration packets while supplies last.

All proceeds from the event benefit the children and adults with mental disabilities who participate in Special Olympics Louisiana year-round programs of sports training and competition.

The St. Charles Catholic Homecoming/Ray Laiche Memorial GolfScramble will be held Monday, October 12 at Riverlands Country Club.

St. Peter Chanel School in Paulina will host its fifth annual golftournament on Monday, Oct. 12, at Briarwood Country Club on AirlineHighway in Baton Rouge.

Teams will consist of a four-man scramble and the entry fee is $75 per player or $300 a team which includes the green fees, cart, range balls, two mulligans, refreshments, lunch and dinner. Individuals who wish toplay but do not have a complete team will be assigned a team.

The top three teams will be awarded prizes as well as opportunities to win various contests. A bar-b-que sausage po-boy will be served for lunchand refreshments will be available during tournament play. Dinner will beserved at the end of the tournament for all players and hole sponsors.

Quality Machine Works, Inc. will be hosting a Benefit Golf ClassicMonday, Oct. 26 at Pelican Point Golf Course in Gonzales.The proceeds from this tournament will benefit the “Get High on Life” Foundation. This foundation is a non-profit organization founded by HaroldKeller and which provides support to those individuals who are struggling with substance abuse, addiction or mental anguish.

The Chrysler Junior Golf Scholarship Program will award 40 $1,000 educational scholarships to America’s most deserving junior golfers.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s new “Share the Victory” motor vehicle recycling program allows anyone in Orleans, Jefferson, St.

Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
