RESERVE – Kara Keller, a junior at the University of Mississippi and a resident of LaPlace, was crowned the 1998 St. John the Baptist ParishSugar Queen at the St. John Theatre Saturday night.It was the 50th anniversary of the pageant, and past Sugar Queens dating back to 1948 were on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Twelve young women entered this year’s pageant, where 1997 Sugar Queen Tracey Burger gave up her crown.

The pageant was directed by Suzanne Cancienne, Sugar ’83, and assistant director Maria Hotard, Sugar ’89. Robert Beadle was master of ceremonies,and Lillian Millet Carter, Sugar ’59, was mistress of ceremonies.

Keller, the 20-year-old daughter of Albert and Kaye Keller of LaPlace, is a 1996 honor graduate of Riverside Academy. She is pursuing a degree incourt reporting at Ole Miss and hopes to become a registered professional court reporter.

Aimee Jolly, daughter of Jerry and Theresa Jolly, was named first runner- up and also won the fashion award.

Other winners were Ashley Tamplain, second runner-up; Amanda Madere, third runner-up; Sadie Lambert, fourth runner-up; Tara Williams, photogenic award; and Jessica Jacob, Miss Congeniality.

Other participants were Shauna St. Pierre, Kelly Madere, Amy Schum,Jacquelyn McGhee and Tamara Broussard.
