The story of “Into the Woods,” by Stephen Sondheim, combines several fairy tales. The first act tells a new story of a baker and his wife whoquest to break the curse that keeps them childless. To reverse this curse,a witch requires certain objects that tie in the stories of Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella.

The second act, darker but just as humorous and warm as the first act, takes place “Once upon a time…later.” Now, a giant’s wife is on a rampageover the death of her husband, who fell to his untimely demise when Jack cut down the beanstalk. What follows is a moving story of therelationships of parents with their children and the responsibility of parents to their children.
