HAMMOND – The pipeline between the River Parishes and Southeastern Louisiana University continued recently when Ronald Madere signed to play baseball for the Lions next season.

Madere, a LaPlace native, was an all-state pitcher at Riverside, helping the Rebels to the 1995 Class 2A state championship. Madere graduatedfrom Riverside in 1996 and played for Jones County Junior College in 1997 where he was the team’s outstanding pitcher. He played this past seasonat Wharton County Junior College in Texas.

Madere joins fellow Rebels Travis Duhon and Preston Hayes and St. CharlesCatholic alumni Brock Anderson and Mackey Waguespack on the Lions’ squad. Carl Shutz, another Riverside alumni, played for Southeasternbefore signing with the Atlanta Braves organization.

“Madere’s a very versatile player who can help us immediately as an infielder, and he can pitch,” SLU head baseball coach Greg Marten said in a press release from the school. “He’ll be used as a reliever and he’llcontend for an infield spot. He’s a good hitter and he’s shown a lot ofpower, so we feel he’s an important addition to the team.”Madere joins outfielder Johnathan Bailey of Southern Union State (Alabama) Junior College, shortstop Kevin Dagg of Big Bend (Washington) Community College, pitcher Brad Pitarro of Hammond, catcher Cory Harold of Denham Springs and shortstop Joey Duhe of St. Amant as additions toLions baseball for next season.
