St. Charles seniors can have house numbers painted

KILLONA – Response time for emergencies called by senior citizens and the infirm is vitally important. However, according to Lt. Dwayne LaGrangeof the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, too many of these residentshave no house numbers.
Added to that problem is the fraudulent activities of people who charge $20 and up to paint house numbers, only to find the cheap, watered-down paint disappear with the first rainfall.
LaGrange said fliers advertising this “service” have recently been distributed in neighborhoods dominated by senior citizens. However, theservice is being provided free of charge by the sheriff’s office, working with the St. Charles Parish Triad Program and Explorer Post No.15.Seniors who want house numbers, who may be physically unable to do it themselves or lack financial or family support to do so otherwise, may phone Triad Liaison Deputy Judy Lanson at 783-1355.
Sheriff Greg Champagne commented: “This effort should not be confused with a Kenner company who has placed fliers in the area, offering to paint numbers on curbs for a fee. Explorers and deputies participating in thisprogram will have proper identification and will not charge for this service.”On Thursday afternoon, Pearl Davis, 235 Killona Drive, Killona, saw the benefit of the program first hand.
Her modest house had no house number. If she were ever in need of anambulance or deputy, response time would suffer if the respondents had to slowly coast down the narrow street to locate her residence.
Instead, thanks to Deputy Daniel Moran and Explorer Scouts Destiny Dufrene, 18, and Forest Bernard, 19, both of Bayou Gauche, Davis now has painted house numbers, easily visible from the street.
“This is wonderful!” Davis exclaimed as she watched the work.
Residents have the choice of having the numbers applied to their mailbox, driveway or house.
