BATON ROUGE – Kyna Boyer, who helped the Hahnville Lady Tigers finish undefeated in capturing the District 6-5A crown this past season, was recently honored by being named to the Class 5A all-state softball team.

Boyer, a senior second baseman, missed 1997 with an injury, but bounced back this year to bat .439. She also excelled in the field, committing justtwo errors in 25 games. She made the all-District 6-5A first team afterleading the Lady Tigers to a 14-0 district record.

Teammate Jamie Picard made the honorable mention team after finishing the season with a 14-2 record. Picard, the District 6-5A most valuableplayer, struck out 128 batters this past season, bringing her career total to over 300.

Picard, a senior right-hander, posted a .37 earned run average whilepitching seven shutouts and two no hitters, including one against Slidell in the bi-district playoffs.

Micah Babato was named the outstanding player in Class 5A after helping Lafayette finish second in the state. The sophomore pitcher went 21-3 in1998. Covington’s Christine Beauvais was named coach of the year.Joining Boyer and Barbato on the all-state team were Denham Springs’ Sarah Meadors, West Ouachita’s Jennifer Lofton, Covington’s Krystal Spinks and Monica DeSilva, West Monroe’s Deni Zeigler and Natalie Hamby, Sulphur’s Kelly Dowden and Jamie Peveto, Chapelle’s Ashley Mehrtens, St.

Amant’s Alana Addison, Natchitoches Central’s Erica Tate, Central’s Julie Wiese, Southwood’s Lacy Remedies and LaGrange’s Kanella Pigee.

In baseball, Destrehan’s Corey Marcel and East St. John’s Samson Monicawere named to the honorable mention team. Marcel, a senior, batted .436with four home runs and 13 doubles with the Wildcats in 1998. He alsowent 5-3 with a 3.91 earned run average in helping Destrehan bounce backfrom a 0-13 start to finish in the thick of the playoff race.

Monica, L’Observateur’s River Parishes most valuable player, batted .412with seven home runs, 12 stolen bases and 46 RBIs in helping East St. Johnto a berth in the state regionals. On the mound, the junior went 7-5 with a2.22 ERA and 82 strikeouts.Archbishop Rummel senior catcher Jeff Winchester was named the outstanding player in Class 5A after batting .481 in 1998. Glen Cecchini ofClass 5A champion Barbe was named the coach of the year.

Joining Winchester on the all-state team were Catholic’s Brad David, Belaire’s Josh Teekel, Lafayette’s Lance Cormier and Billy McBride, Barbe’s Jared Gothreaux, Nick Bourgeois and Neil Simoneaux.

Also, Salmen’s Mike Fontenot, Mandeville’s Gary Cressend, Jesuit’s Wally Pontiff, South Lafourche’s Lance Reynolds, West Monroe’s P.J. Johnson, St.Amant’s Joey Duhe, Denham Springs’ Cory Harold and Slidell’s Barrett McCreary.
