BATON ROUGE – St. Charles Catholic head softball coach Teri Hruska wasnamed the Class 2A Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Comets to their first ever state championship.

St. Charles Catholic defeated Riverside, 2-1, in the championship game.The victory capped a season that saw the Lady Comets go 24-9 and finish second in District 9-2A.

Riverside junior pitcher Tanya Teague and senior outfielder Melissa Martin were named to the Class 2A all-state team after helping lead the Lady Rebels to the District 9-2A title and a berth in the state championship game. Teague finished the season with a 24-7 record and a .46 earned runaverage and had 170 strikeouts in 139 innings.

Martin, who recently played in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association all-star game, batted .513 with eight home runs, 41 runsbatted in and 20 stolen bases.

Named to the honorable mention team was St. Charles Catholic sophomorepitcher Marci Martin. Martin went 19-7 in 1998 with a 1.41 ERA and 155strikeouts. Martin also batted .360 on the season.DeQuincy pitcher Aime Rosalis was selected as the Class 2A Outstanding Player after going 21-4 in 1998. Other members of the all-state teamwere Ouachita Christian’s Brienne Berry and Allison Smith, Teurlings’ Stacie Dufour, DeQuincy’s Jamie Owens, St. Frederick’s Delle Milam,Buckeye’s Stephanie Sasser, Rapides’ Kathryn Vandersteen, Christian Life’s Lani Corbin, Loyola’s Christy Tucker, Episcopal’s Megan O’Leary, Block’s Wendi Scott and North Vermilion’s Sarah Steward.

In baseball, St. Charles Catholic’s John Price was named to the Class 2Aall-state team as an utility player. The District 9-2A most valuableplayer helped lead the Comets to the District 9-2A title and their first appearance in the state finals since 1977. The Comets fell to Pope JohnPaul II, 12-7, in the finals.

Price batted .486 with six home runs and 35 RBIs in his junior year.Named to the honorable mention team were St. Charles Catholic juniorpitcher Courtney Bonura and Riverside junior shortstop Dustin Zimmer.

Bonura went 3-0 and had a 3.76 ERA in district play. Zimmer batted .448with six home runs as the Rebels’ lead-off hitter.

Pope John Paul II junior catcher Mike Sanchez was named the Class 2A Outstanding Player after leading the Jaguars to the state title with a .320batting average. Joining Price and Sanchez on the all-state team wereLoyola’s Bobby Gilliam, Pope John Paul’s Mike Hingle, Teurlings’ Jared Salazar, Justin Bourque and Scotty Collette, Kinder’s Aaron Smith and Brian Rice, Buras’ Eric Duplessis, Pickering’s Dave Montiel, Ridgewood’s Bucky Kase, Ouachita Christian’s Dan Preaus and Jared Cross, St.

Frederick’s Brandon Bruscato and Episcopal’s Andrew Sexton.

Micah Harper of Ouachita Christian was named the outstanding coach in Class 2A.
