Boyer, Mccully, Hebert Lead Local Athletes On Academic Teams

BATON ROUGE – The softball teams in the River Parishes enjoyed success in the classroom as well as on the playing field this past season, placing a number of athletes on the Louisiana High School Athletic Association academic all-state team.

Hahnville’s Kyna Boyer and Tricia McCully and Lutcher’s Mitzi Hebert were selected to the academic all-state composite team. The composite teamconsisted of players who had the highest grade point average in their sport and classification.

Boyer, a second baseman, and McCully, an outfielder, both had grade point averages of 4.0. The two help the Lady Tigers win the District 6-5A titlethis past season.

Hebert, a second baseman, helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the Class 3A state championship this season. Hebert was the only player from Class 3Ato compile a 4.0 GPA. Joining Boyer and McCully on the Class 5A academic all-state team were was teammate Jamie Picard and Destrehan’s Tina Johnson and Amanda Gauthe. Picard had a 3.9038 GPA in being named as a pitcher. Johnson wasalso selected as a pitcher with a 3.4899 GPA. Gauthe was named as a firstbaseman with a 3.7730 GPA. Named to the Class 5A honorable mention squad were East St. John’sCrystal Loupe, Amy Rebaldo and Jasmin Green; Destrehan’s Mignon Benoit, Aimee Ladreyt, Rachel Owens, Robbi Simon and Vali Lowry; and Hahnville’s Tiffany Cologne and Marci Stewart.

Loupe, Benoit and Cologne were selected as catchers. Loupe had a 3.6595GPA, Benoit had a .34366 GPA and Cologne’s GPA was 3.0400. Ladreyt wasselected as a third baseman with a 3.3960 GPA. Rebaldo had a 3.4791 GPA.Owens, Green, Simon, Stewart and Lowry were selected in the outfield.

Owens had a 3.8868 GPA, Green a 3.8627, Simon a 3.4900, Stewart a3.3888 and Lowry a 3.3010.Joining Hebert on the Class 3A all-state academic team was teammate Brandy Neal. Neal compiled a 3.8776 GPA over her career to lead all Class3A shortstops. Lutcher’s Kim St. Pierre was selected as an outfielder onthe honorable mention team with a 3.1666 GPA.Named to the Class 2A honorable mention team were St. Charles Catholic’sKristin Oberschmidt and Riverside’s Melissa Martin. Oberschmidt wasselected with a 3.3061 GPA while Martin had a 3.1489 GPA.In order to be selected to the academic all-state team, the student had to be nominated by both her principal and softball coach and had to have achieved a seven-semester cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0or better based on a 4.0 scale. Members of the academic all-state composite team will be honored during the all-star softball doubleheader scheduled at Port Barre High School on Saturday, June 6.

In baseball, St. Charles Catholic’s Ty Monica was named to the Class 2Aacademic all-state team as an outfielder with a 3.6896 GPA. TeammateJon Clement was selected as a second baseman to the honorable mention team with a 3.4310 GPA. Riverside’s Rene Trosclair was also selected tothe honorable mention team as a pitcher with a 3.0400 GPA.Lutcher’s Mark Whitney and Lance Roques were named to the Class 3A honorable mention team. Whitney was selected as a pitcher with a 3.1224and Roques made it as a catcher after achieving a 3.4082 GPA.
