EDGARD – The Wantu Wazuri Social and Civic Club of Edgard will present 13 debutantes at the organization’s second cotillion, scheduled for May 2 at West St. John High School. A reception and dance will also be held.

According to Deola Ellis, a “Miss Cotillion” will be crowned during the evening. In addition, the young ladies will honor one of their own with a”Miss Congeniality” award.

“We’ve always had activities for other age groups, so this year we wanted to do something for the young people,” Ellis said, regarding the group’s second cotillion. The young ladies’ families will be present, too, and theywill be escorted by young gentlemen at the cotillion.

Debutantes are: * Kashanta Adams, daughter of Carol and Daryl Adams, a senior at West St. John. * Karmataneece Bailey, daughter of Kathy and Perry Bailey of Edgard, a junior at West St. John High.* Shirin M. Bovie, daughter of Sandra and Oscar Bovie of Edgard, a senior atWest St. John High.* Angel M. Collins, daughter of Melba and Alvin E. Collins of Edgard, asenior at West St. John High.* Heather Edwards, daughter of Darlene Edwards and Landry Borne of Edgard, a senior at West St. John High.* Maria Nichole Huntley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Huntley of NewOrleans, a junior at Ursuline Academy.

* Schmekia M. Jackson, daughter of Dianne Johnson and James Jackson ofEdgard, a senior at West St. John High.* Tonyaneka Jackson, daughter of Rhondalyn and Lionel Jackson of Edgard, a senior at West St. John High.* Danielle M. Louis, daughter of Dolores Louis of Edgard, a junior at WestSt. John High.* Ashanti Lumar, daughter of Jerome Lumar of Edgard, a junior at West St. John High.

* Tekleanna C. Nicholas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Williams ofVacherie, a junior at West St. John High.* Reshonn A. Saul, daughter of Emelda and Donald Saul of Vacherie, ajunior at West St. John High.* Donyell Stipe, daughter of Cheryl Stipe and Michael Borne of Edgard, a sophomore at West St. John High. The Wantu Wazuri Social and Civic Club has been in existence for 22 years.

Members donate their time and talents to the people of the community of Edgard.

Each year, the organization provides Thanksgiving dinners and baskets to senior citizens in the area. Also, the club organizes a Santa Clauscelebration for youngsters. The group also awards a scholarship to twoseniors at West St. John High School on graduation day.Club members working had to make the group’s second cotillion a success include Mary E. Johnson, president, and Chermaine Roybiskie, vice-president and cotillion chairperson.
