DESTREHAN – The Democratic Women’s Organization of the River Parishes formally elected officers and a board of governors recently at Destrehan Manor plantation. Fortieth Judicial District Judge Mary Ann Hotard Becnelperformed the swearing-in of officers.

Chairman Dr. Patricia Williams Landry said the establishment of theorganization was driven by a lack of a political network for Democratic supporters among River Parishes women.

Other members of the executive committee include President Judy Songy, Vice President Wilhelmina Armour, Treasurer Stanislaus Johnson and Secretary Glenda Jeansonne.

This organization was developed to encourage and empower women to participate in government by taking an active role in the education, awareness and development of issues important to local citizens and to Louisiana.

Landry added that through the organization, “we hope to find solutions utilizing the governmental process, in addition to promoting opportunities for Democratic women to achieve elected and appointed positions in government.”Songy presented an overview of plans and goals for 1998, including an education forum to identify problems and take an active role in finding solutions. A newsletter is also planned to bring the issues and areas ofconcern to the attention of River Parishes voters.

A governmental liaison and her committee will represent the organization in Baton Rouge as necessary to voice local opinions at legislative sessions and committee hearings.

A goal of 500 members in St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. Jamesparishes has been set.
