LUTCHER’S BENN NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-STATE

BATON ROUGE – Lutcher’s April Benn, who helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the state quarterfinals, was honored recently for her achievements by being selected to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all- state honorable mention team.

The senior guard finished sixth in the New Orleans metro area in Class 3A by averaging 12 points per game. Benn was the Lady Bulldogs’ floor leader,averaging a team-high 4.8 assists per game. She was an all-River Parishesselection as well as a member of the All-District 10-3A team.

Lutcher advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time in school history in 1997-98 before falling to Amite.

Bunkie’s Latisha Prater was named the Class 3A player of the year after averaging 18.2 points per game. Joining Prater on the state first teamwere Jennings’ Tessie Simar, Amite’s Misty Stevens, Franklinton’s Velicity Burkhalter and Ferriday’s Ann Webster.

Kaisha Lymon of District 10-3A champion Donaldsonville was named to the second team. Joining Lymon were Notre Dame’s Carlotta Caffey,Mansfield’s Niesha Turner, Franklinton’s Nickie Magee and Brusly’s Angie Jordan.

North Caddo’s Kenneth Goldman was named the Class 3A coach of the year.

Marqus Ledoux of Class 3A state champion Parkview Baptist led the boys’ all-state team. Joining Ledoux were teammate Robert Jupiter,Washington-Marion’s Greg Cole, Farmerville’s Antonio Meeking and Green Oaks’ Shawnson Johnson. Rayville’s Larry Wilson was selected as theClass 3A coach of the year.
