LULING – One goal down, two to go for the Hahnville Lady Tigers.

Hahnville reached its first goal Tuesday afternoon at West bank Bridge Park, defeating Terrebonne, 7-1, to clinch the District 6-5A championship.

The title was the first for the Lady Tigers since they won the District 5- 5A championship in 1994, coach E.J. Tassin’s first year with the team.

Now the Lady Tigers, with a 11-0 record in district play and 16-1 overall, have their sights set on their final two goals – finish the season undefeated in district and win the state championship. The Lady Tigers have come close to the latter recently, advancing to the quarterfinals in Alexandria every year since 1994.

The Lady Tigers looked like state contenders Tuesday in extending their school-record winning streak to 16 games. After Fallon Cancienne got out of a one-out, runner on second jam in the top of the first by getting Jill Trahan to line out to second, the Lady Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the frame off Terrebonne starter Kelly Dagenhardt.

With one out, Kyna Boyer beat out a grounder to short and stole second. One out later, Angie Roussel grounded to third baseman Jill Whatley, whose throw to first sailed past Monica Rhodes, allowing Boyer to come in to score.

Jamie Picard followed with a single to left and both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Dagenhardt. Cancienne then helped herself, lining a shot down the third baseline to score both Roussel and Picard and giving the Lady Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Terrebonne cut into the deficit in the top of the second as Toni Poiencot led off with a single to right and was sacrificed to second by Dagenhardt.

After Poiencot went to third on Rhodes’ ground out to Cancienne, Brooke Hebert brought her by dropping a single into left field.

Hahnville got that run back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Tiffany Cologne lined a single to left. One out later, Picard singled to left and Cancienne followed with a shot to left center-field to score Cologne, giving the Lady Tigers a 4-1 cushion.

The Lady Tigers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and three Terrebonne errors. Tyna Wells opened the inning with a single over Poiencot’s head in center field. Kristie Tassin then bunted back to Dagenhardt, whose throw went past first allowing Wells to advance to third.

Erin Crisham followed by beating out another bunt to Dagenhardt, scoring Wells. Both runners moved up as Dagenhardt’s throw went into the throw at first.

After Boyer was ruled out for stepping in front of the plate, Cologne brought Tassin in with a long fly ball to center. Crisham came in as Roussel just missed hitting one out in center field, lining a double off the wall to make it 7-1.

Hahnville closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth as Crisham led off with a single to left and stole second. Boyer then beat out a grounder to short, advancing to second on Rhode’s throw to third to get Crisham who slid in safely.

Cologne followed with a fly ball to left that ticked off Jamie Poiencot’s glove in left, allowing Crisham and Boyer to score with Cologne going to second on the throw home.

Picard knocked in Cologne with a single to left and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. After a fly out by Cancienne, Picard advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tricia McCully then lofted a soft liner that fell over the second base bag, scoring Picard with the district-clinching run. Cancienne went the distance in improving to 7-0 on the season, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking one.

“It means a lot to them,” Tassin said of the district title for his team that has eight seniors.

“We hit the ball and we had the defense to make the plays today.”
