MOLLOY, FURUSA TAKE FIRST AT HALE BOGGS RUN

LULING – Slidell’s Susan Molloy set the course record in winning the female division of the TransAmerican Refining Corporation Hale Boggs Bridge 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning.

Molloy, sponsored by PowerBar, finished with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds in her first time running the race. The previous female record of18:15 was set by Lynn MacDougall in last year’s race.

Molloy, who runs an average of 20 to 25 races a year, said the running conditions were really good during the race.

“The whole bridge, the wind was to our backs and the humidity was lower than yesterday,” Molloy said.

Tina Zellner of Slidell finished second with a time of 18:52, followed by Vickie Reade of New Orleans.

The men’s division had a repeat champion as Baton Rouge’s Passmore Furusa crossed the line in 14:97. Furusa, a former track star at LSU, wonlast year with a course-record time of 14:28. Furusa, who plans tocompete in Europe this summer, said he has had a cold the last two weeks and has battled knee problems Chalmette’s Gene Cavalier placed second in the men’s division with a time of 15:13, followed by New Orleans’ Paul Mutai at 15:24.

Harvey’s Derrick Lee placed first in the Masters’ division in 17:46 and Mandeville’s Karl Victor won the Grandmasters with a time of 19.46. Inthe women’s division, Kathleen Welch of Baton Rouge was the Masters champion with a time of 20:48. The Grandmasters champion was Gretna’sElizabeth Van Battum with a time of 25:46.

Overall winners received $250 with Molloy receiving a $250 bonus for breaking the course record. Second place winners received $150 and thirdplace finishers and winners of the Masters and Racewalkers categories received $100.

Over 1,500 runners and walkers participated in the race that started at Eastbank Bridge Park in Destrehan, crossed over the bridge spanning the Mississippi River and concluded at Westbank Bridge Park in Luling.

Proceeds from the annual race benefit the United Way of St. Charles andits over 30 agencies and programs.
