The general membership of the River Region Arts and Humanities Council recently elected new directors to its board, bringing the number up to 19 directors.

The seven new directors are Toni Meyer, Darryl Chauvin and Eric LaBranche of St. John Parish; Sandra Chaisson and Betty Haydel of St. Charles Parish;and Jude Gravois and Jennifer Rutledge of St. James Parish. They willserve a two-year term from 1998-2000.

The Charter Board of Directors, serving 1997-1999, are Geri Broussard Baloney, Mary Hotard Becnel, Shay Clark, Roberta Rainwater, Mary Raymond, J. Sterling Snowdy, Richard B. Stricks and Marilyn Vicknair of St.John; Marilyn Duffy and Vern Insley of St. Charles; Mara Landrum of St.James; and Robert Noonan of Ascension Parish.

The second annual membership meeting was held at Belle Terre Country Club in LaPlace, and the regular monthly board meeting was held there also, following the annual meeting. New officers elected at the boardmeeting were Shay Clark, president; Vern Insley, vice-president; Mara Landrum, secretary; and Marilyn Duffy, re-elected as treasurer. Theoutgoing officers were Roberta Rainwater, president; Mary Raymond, vice- president; and Robert Noonan, secretary. Officers serve one-year termsunless re-elected.

The River Region Arts and Humanities Council was established in October 1996 after nearly a year of steering committee meetings to write by- laws. The council’s founders are Roberta Rainwater and Mary Raymond,both artists and writers who felt the River Region needed a strong advocate organization for the arts and humanities. The council’s purposeis to help, in any way, artists and organizations from all creative disciplines.

The council has established an annual art show and a quarterly arts calendar of events/newsletter called “Segue” and plans to publish a resource directory of organizations and individuals from all creative disciplines in the River Region, which it defines as St. Charles, St. John,St. James and Ascension parishes. Current copies of “Segue” are availableat the parish libraries in the River Region.

A strong membership campaign is also being worked on by the board, as are ideas for literary and performance events.
