LAPLACE – The first pitches of the 1998 River Parishes baseball season were tossed out this weekend at the St. Charles Catholic Jamboree.Hahnville and East St. John opened up the tournament Friday afternoon,with the Tigers coming away with a 4-1 victory. East St. John bouncedback in the nightcap, defeating the host St. Charles Catholic Comets, 4-2.Hahnville also opened up Saturday’s action against Riverside. Mike Rogeropened the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and advanced to third as Lane Troxler singled off the glove of starting pitcher Darin St.

Pierre.

After Troxler stole second, Kade Rogers struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, scoring Roger and sending Troxler to third. Tommy Theriotfollowed with a single, plating Troxler with the Tigers’ second run.

With the bases loaded and one out, Chris Hawkins grounded to short. ChrisBourgeois threw home but his throw pulled Blake Duhe off the plate as Theriot scored to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. St. Pierre got out of furthertrouble by getting Justin Champagne to pop up to first and striking out Chris Toups.

Brian Risinger got the Rebels in order in the top of the second with the help of a sliding grab in center field by Roger. Risinger pitched twoscoreless innings, allowing only a one-out walk to St. Pierre in the top ofthe first.

The Tigers threatened again in the bottom of the second as Roger reached second on a throwing error by St. Pierre and Troxler singled to shortstop.After Rogers sacrificed the runners over, St. Pierre settled down, strikingout Theriot and inducing Dewey Matherne to fly out to right to end the inning.

Seth Simmons relieved Risinger in the top of the third and got the first two batters out before walking Brandon Delaneuville. With Delaneuvillebreaking to second on the hit and run, St. Pierre knocked a single throughthe hole between first and second. Champagne overran the ball in rightfield, allowing Delaneuville to score and sending St. Pierre to third.Joey Poirrier followed, scoring St. Pierre with a double down the third-base line. Joel Ortiz plated Poirrier with the tying run with a single tocenter field before Simmons struck out Ryan Rome to end the inning.

Rome came in to retire the side in order in the bottom of the third.

In other baseball action Saturday, Vandebilt defeated the Riverside, 4-2, and followed with a 2-0 victory over Lutcher. Lutcher rebounded to defeatSt. Charles Catholic, 3-1, behind the pitching of Mark Whitney.Lutcher and St. Charles Catholic opened up the softball season Fridayafternoon. After a scoreless first inning, Jenee Weber opened up the top ofthe first for Lutcher by beating out a bunt to third base. Cindy Guidryfollowed with another bunt to third with Weber beating Stephanie Trosclair’s throw to second. Guidry headed for third and came in to scoreas second baseman Alicia Reine overthrew third.

St. Charles Catholic starting pitcher Marci Martin pitched out of furthertrouble by getting Christie Melancon to ground out to Reine and inducing Kim St. Pierre to pop up to short. Right fielder Lacey Trepagnier followedwith a running catch over the foul line to end the inning.

Martin retired the side in order in the top of the third, aided by a fine defensive play by Reine. Lutcher starter Erin Hymel followed by strikingout the side in the bottom of the inning to preserve the victory. Hymel heldthe Lady Comets to one hit, an infield hit by Jessie Zeringue in the first, while striking out five.

The Lady Comets bounced back to defeat East Ascension, 3-1, in the opener Saturday. Lutcher followed with a 1-0 victory over Covington as MichelleRoussel tripled in Hymel with the winning run in the bottom of the third.

In other action, Destrehan fell to Ponchatoula, 1-0, before coming back to defeat Slidell, 4-1.

Riverside also lost its first game in the jamboree, 1-0 to Covington, before defeating Ponchatoula, 1-0, in the finale. Mandy Roussel knocked inBridget Lambert with the winning run with a one-out single in the bottom of the third.
