DES ALLEMANDS – In 1994, the Krewe of Lions Carnival parade in Des Allemands died and no official parade rolled that year. However, localfloat riders who appeared that year in Luling’s parade rolled “unofficially” through Des Allemands anyway.

By 1995, the Krewe of Des Allemands was formed, mostly through the efforts of Becky Dufrene and Brenda Folse, and their first parade rolled, with Skee and Leona Roger its first king and queen selected by the community.

This year, the Krewe rolls Sunday at 2 p.m., with Merlin and GladysSchaubhut the 1998 royalty. They succeed the 1996 royals Stanley andOlive Dufrene and 1997 royals Whitney and Myrtle Naquin.

On Valentine’s Day the Schaubhuts were the center of attraction at a carnival ball held in their honor at the Father Mac Community Center of St.

Gertrude Catholic Church.

Present and past royalty attended and led the 150-plus attendees in a toast to the new king and queen, who then led off in a solo dance to the music of Sook and the Breeze.

A relaxing evening of dinner, dancing and good friends followed.

The parade is due to line up on Louisiana Highway 631, from where it will turn right on Whitley Drive to U.S. Highway 90. From there, the paradeturns west, through Des Allemands and right on DeJean Lane.

The parade then turns right on Old Spanish Trail and back to Highway 631 to Lorraine Drive, where it will disband.

This year’s parade is dedicated to the memory of long-time rider Gary Folse.
