LUTCHER – At the St. James Parish School Board meeting Tuesday night, three schools were honored for their growth and improvement on the LEAPtests.

Assistant Superintendent Caldonia Ceasar said Lutcher High Schoolimproved its LEAP test scores four years straight. And Sixth WardElementary and Lutcher Elementary both improved theirs for three yearsrunning, she said.

Ceasar credits improvements to the fact that teachers are doing moreexercises in class that require students to do critical thinking.

“This gives the students an explanation or reason for using the answersthey use,” Ceasar said.

Teachers are also helping the students prepare more for the tests.

“They used better test strategies,” Ceasar said. “We are constantly doingthis and getting the teachers to utilize everything they can.”

She added that some of the schools even have after school tutoringprograms for struggling students.
