LULING – Destrehan High School got a little bigger Wednesday night as theSt. Charles Parish School Board accepted the school’s new classroomaddition as being substantially completed.The building adjacent to the existing facility will house 30 classrooms.Destrehan principal Chipper Simon said classes to be held in the additionare English, social studies and foreign languages. Classes had been held in20 portables at the 1,500-student school.”This relieves the portables from being academic area classrooms,” Simonsaid.

Simon said he hopes to be able to move the classes to the new $2.7 millionfacility in a couple of weeks. He said both students and faculty areimpressed with the new addition.Getting students to school also received a boost when the board acceptedthe bid from Louis Schwartz, Inc. for 12 new school buses at a cost of$49,672.50 per bus. Transportation Director Gary Martin said the systemcan expect to get these buses, along with 29 buses approved last fall, inApril. The updating of the district’s fleet was a recommendation made byOehm Management in its audit of the district’s transportation departmentin 1997.

In other business, the board approved for a first reading the district’sWorkman’s Compensation Plan. The board also approved a proclamation byGov. Mike Foster proclaiming Wednesday as school nurse day in Louisiana.

The board approved another proclamation by Foster declaring Feb. 2through Feb. 6 as school counseling week in Louisiana.
