A lost piece of history, found

Over the years, I have enjoyed exploring the shore of Lake Pontchartrain where the old towns once stood before the storm of 1915. I have written numerous articles for several different publications about these towns and tried to let you get the feel of how hard life was for these families that lived in this time along the lakeshore.

The dangers of apathy
When asked what’s the opposite of love, 99 percent of the people will incorrectly answer “hate.” Most of my life, I, too, thought the opposite of love was hate. One day, while driving to New Orleans across the spillway in Norco, I was listening to a Christian radio program, and the speaker said that the opposite of love is not hate but apathy. “Apathy!” I thought. “Such a harmless sounding word.”

Local receives high certification
Cheryl Allen of St. James has been certified as a National Trainer-Behavorial Classroom Management by the Center for Teacher Effectiveness. Allen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in HR Management with a minor in Training and Organizational Development.

East St. John High receives $15,000 grant
RESERVE – The McDonald’s corporation and East St. John High School’s Jobs for America’s Graduates program recently announced the continuation of their partnership with a induction ceremony at the school, that included check presentation.

Everyone is looking for a ‘burning bush’
I attended a 12-step program last week with a friend of mine. Years ago, I was first introduced to the program at this same location.

Local high school high-achievers to participate in Tulane University conference
The inaugural Black Women’s Health Conference at Tulane University will take place Feb. 24-25, at the Josephine Louise Ballroom and Rogers Memorial Chapel. Among the participants is a cohort of students from Metro New Orleans schools selected to be part of the inaugural class of Black Women’s Health Scholars Program. Nominated by school counselors and local community members, and selected by a team of Tulane faculty, BWH Scholars were chosen based on their records of high academic achievement and proven leadership.

St. Charles Satellite Center gets field experience
Digital Media team members from the Satellite Center in Luling participated in a field experience at Garrity Print Solutions in Harahan. Garrity Print Solutions is one of the largest commercial printers in the Southeastern United States and provides its customers with a variety of custom printing and mailing solutions.

Citrus: Things which affect blooming and fruit set
As we approach warmer days and the end of the severe cold weather, it is important to remove the citrus from your tree so the tree can rest and prepare itself for another fruitful year of production. Fruit should be removed from most all of the citrus trees except lemons and the late bearing citrus types like Moro oranges.

St. John Parish Schools announce Students of the Year
RESERVE – The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board has announced the district’s winners of the 2011-12 Student of the Year awards.

SJA honors Citizens of the Month
St. Joan of Arc Catholic School has recognized nine students as its “Citizen of the Month” for January. The program rewards students who go out of their way to help others, behave courteously or show exemplary manners. Teachers and other staff members nominate SJA students for the honor, and the winners receive a special pizza-and-soda luncheon on campus. SCC Starsteppers blow judges away
The St. Charles Catholic Starsteppers performed at the American All-Star Louisiana State Dance/Drill Team Competition on Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette. The Starsteppers performed three routines and placed in their division in all three routines. They also placed over-all in the state for two of their routines. The Starsteppers received fifth place in Division I for their Jazz routine. They placed first in Division I and fourth in the state for their High Kick Routine and they also placed first in Division I and second in the state for their Prop/Novelty routine. Also, one of the Starsteppers, Lauren Snowdy, was chosen, based on her solo dance audition and personal interview, to be a member of the American All-Star Staff.

February, the month of ‘I love you’
This week, we welcome the month of February. The weather is usually overcast, chilly and rainy. If you’re not into skiing the slopes, ice-skating or singing in the rain, there’s not a lot outside to excite you.

VFW honors St. John Sheriff office
VFW Post 3337 donates a plaque of appreciation to Sheriff Wayne L. Jones for his dedication and commitment to the citizens of St. John the Baptist Parish. A little hard work can go a long way
Last week two very close friends from LaPlace presented me with a special gift of a Brunswick phonograph for my museum. It is a model No. 101, dated Feb. 13, 1923, with serial no. 102727. It is a beautiful piece with all the details and plays the Victor records perfectly after you wind it up.

HHS receives grant
Hahnville High School talented art teacher Terry Linder received a $500 grant from the River Region Arts and Humanities Council. The grant will be used to enhance the Talented Art AP program.
