St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with “celebrity” readers, “Cat in the Hat” cakes and hats, green eggs and ham, raffles and assemblies.
NSE studies other cultures
New Sarpy Elementary School recently celebrated Multi-Cultural Week. Students and teachers dressed in native costumes and various guest speakers shared information with students. Every day a different country, continent or region was highlighted. Monday was Central America, Tuesday was Ireland, Wednesday was Africa, Thursday was China, and Friday was France. St. John ARC holds annual Mardi Gras ball
The joy of Mardi Gras came alive for the clients at the St John ARC along with their families and staff members at the second annual Krewe de ARC Mardi Gras Ball. The magic took place in the transformed auditorium at East St. John Elementary.

St. James Parish Hospital hosted a banquet to honor the 2009 Employee of the Quarter recipients. The employees of the Quarter for 2009 were Donna Labiche, Gwen Rizzuto, Mike DiCarlo and Laurie Bourgeois.

Luling – United Way of St. Charles is hosting their 14th Annual 5K Bridge Run/Walk and Festival on Saturday, April 10, presented by Motiva Enterprises and Valero St. Charles Refinery.

Harry Hurst teacher wins top teacher award
Harry Hurst teacher Tammy Windmann, was selected as the American Legion Teacher of the Year by the American Legion Post 366 in Destrehan. Windmann was recognized for her outstanding service to the community, state and nation by efforts to educate the children of St. Charles Parish of the effort our Veterans gave to keep our country free. Windmann was the driving force to bring “The Wall That Heals” (a half size replica of the Vietnam War Memorial) to our community so that students and others could see the sacrifices that were and to help heal those who lost loved ones in all wars.
Riverside hosts Hispanic Arts Festival

The trouble with sewing machines
Thousands of years ago, sewing was done by hand using needles of ivory, animal bone and fish bone. This continued until 1830 when a tailor from Lyon, France, named Barthelemy Thimmonier, invented a sewing machine.
SCB competes at state
The dance team at St. Charles Borromeo School in Destrehan competed in the American All - Star State Competition held in Lafayette. The Twisters performed their routines were they placed fifth overall in Pom and second overall in Kick. HHS students sleep in boxes
The HHS Student Council sponsored a “Sleep in a Box” night in an effort to raise money for the Invisible Children Foundation. Students were required to sleep in a box either alone or in a group. The event was from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and took place on the HHS Football field. Activities were available for the students including relay races, soccer balls, footballs, frisbees and karaoke. The winners of the “Best Box” competition in the boys division was Edward Brooks with a “Shoe Box” and the girls division was (left to right) Brianna Hue and Amanda Petit with their “Tiger Boom Box.” They received “Breakfast in a Box” from Burger King in the morning. The Student Council raised a total of $750 for the Invisible Children Foundation.
