Thanksgiving came a little early this year
Dottie Millet of LaPlace shares a moment with St. John Sheriff Wayne L. Jones during the Sheriff’s Offfice’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the East St. John Elementary cafeteria. The Sheriff’s Office provided meals to more than 380 parish senior citizens, which, according to Jones, was the largest turnout in the history of the 14-year-old event. “I love this event and I love how it brings out so many residents who enjoy passing a good time with others in the community,” Jones said to the crowd before food was served. “I just hope this isn’t the only time y’all get together.” Prior to digging in to the food, which was donated and served by the St. John Rotary Club, the Sheriff’s Office Crime Fighters and volunteers from St. Charles Catholic High School, the senior citizens in attendance engaged in a series of Bingo games and entered drawings for a variety of door prizes. One lucky attendee from LaPlace was the happy winner of a 32-inch flat screen TV. (Staff photo by Robin Shannon)

Black Friday shopping not for me
The trampling death of a Wal-Mart employee in Valley Stream, N.Y., and the shooting deaths of two men inside a Toys R Us in Palm Desert, Calif., last year on Black Friday left me wondering: Do these fools really know what the spirit of the season means?
