LAPLACE – St. John Parish Sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects in connection with a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning near a newly opened LaPlace nightclub, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

A 39-year-old St. James man was shot three times in his left leg while his car was stopped along Airline Highway about 2 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Andy Breaux, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Breaux said the man, whose name was not released, had been arguing with another man inside Club 1107 on Airline Highway in LaPlace before the shooting took place. Breaux said security guards at the club asked the two men to leave.

The building wherenthe club is located formerly housed Club Xquisite, which was shut down in August following the shooting death of a 17-year-old patron in the club’s parking lot.

According to a report from police, the victim and his 25-year-old wife left the club in the victim’s car and headed eastbound on Airline Highway, and the car was stopped by a burgundy sedan blocking the highway near McReine Road.

Breaux said the sedan’s driver got out of his car and began firing several shots at the victim’s vehicle. Following the shooting, the victim was able to drive himself to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace for treatment. His condition is not known.

Later in the morning police stopped a vehicle fitting the description of the shooter’s car in New Orleans. Breaux said one of the three men in the car was detained and transferred to the St. John Sheriff’s Detective Bureau for questioning. Breaux said deputies have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting.

Anyone with any information on the incident should contact St. John Sheriff’s Detective Walter Stevens at 985-652-6338.

" How is that another club can be opened in this location after Club Xquisite had been closed down? Now, if this man dies as a result, that will be 2 murders associated with this club's location. When is the local law enforcement gonna wakeup? This kind of violence should not be tolerated in our community! "

" This is ridiculous... That place should have never been able to re-open... Things like this will happen over and over again as long as that zoo is allowed to continue business... It's obvious that place draws in an undesirable crowd in which right and wrong don't seem to matter.... What do you expect from a place that has a neon sign out front that scrolls the words "free turkey necks"? This entire town needs a make over. "

" The cops are going to sit out there a act as Prison guards for these convicts but then we'll have ACLU out here saying we're destroying they're rights so It's a lose lose situation "

" Well, what can you expect? Don't you think the same owner probably opened the club just under a different name? This is ridiculous. I used to love living here when I first moved here 17 years ago, now I am afraid for my life and my children's life. They can't even go outside to play for fear that something like this will come into our neighborhood! Please this town really does need something positive to happen or alot of people will be selling and moving out!! "

" This is one reason why after 18 years we moved away from LaPlace. "

" What a shame. I lived in LaPlace for many years and remember when it was a good & safe place (pre-Carr's development of the "Cambridge Hood) to live & raise your family. Do not try to tell me that Cambridge was a way 'in' for middle income 1st time homeowners. It was pure greed on the part of the developers of the 'project' & a 'golden opportunity' for the low-life's that took immediate advantage of the Govt's home give a way programs through FHA foreclosures.

So many people lost their futures to that swamp--not to mention those neighboring subdivision homeowners that did not have the foresight or ability to get out before the bottom fell out of their property values.

My sympathies & best regards are with the good people of S.J.T.B.P.! "

" This business gives this city a black eye. It's a shame that there was obviously so much money invested to beautify it after Katrina and the fire to the building only to open it up to a bunch of animals.
When it was RJ's and Tennessee's nothing EVER happened there. Now it caters to the Rap crowd and the killings are happening. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that it should be closed to this type of venue once and for all! "

" You're all entitled to your opinion. But it's racist comments and actions from people like you who throw stones and live in glass houses. No one heard of all the fights before because thats how things are done in LaPlace and you know exactly what I mean. Go ahead and be as judgemental as you want to be, but truth be told you're no safer now where you are than you were here twenty years ago. No one is, not me, not you! Sad, but True! Changing times. The issue isn't one race of people its the mentality of each individual committing the acts of crime. We have to stop being such bigots. God made us all. He didn't make you and somebody else made me. There's good and bad in all of us. Even in your own family. A lot of times its not even people from our community whose committing these crimes. I think our sheriff Wayne Jones is doing a great job and his department is to be commended on the job they do. LaPlace is better off without those that really don't want to be here, because what we need is complete unity among those who stand for what's right. God Bless You. "

" This Response is to each one of you whom posted a comment in reference to Club 1107.

I have socialized at Club 1107 and the night in which I attended, showed no sign what-so-ever of the club being managed like a "zoo" or a “zoo keeper.”
There were Caucasian/White women and men inside as well as these African American/Black women and men there on the night I attended.
Hip hop and country crowds can act like their in a Zoo I have experienced that personally for myself.

I know of an area on the airline where several wrecks have occurred you know the area on the airline near the spillway where countless wrecks have occurred and people have lost their lives and the city has not done anything to resolve the issue such as place guard rails for protection. Why has the city not shut that part of the highway down due to the many deaths that have occurred there in that area? Place concern and efforts to countless and senseless issues like that if you to complain about something meaningful and able to be controlled.

So a club has a shoot out. That makes it the owners fault. No you look at it as a harbor for zoo animals to gather. Fact is a gas station can be a harbor your home your neighbors home the corner store or a house party can be a harbor for such crimes. (Do you not read the paper and watch the news?)

So down the street from the club there is another shoot out and you blame the club itself? That’s “indignant” of you as a person. You want to shut down a club that has favorable upcoming charity projects scheduled to make it a positive contribution to the Parish for what? Just because you believe Hip Hop People behave like zoo animals?

I'm pretty sure you have a family member who behaves as a zoo animal black or white descendent but have you casted him out as being a family member? This club has 25+ as an age requirement. It is very much so trying to change the image of the formally known X-quisite. It’s only been open 6 weeks. Stop pre-judging based on a neon sign that reads "free turkey necks" How about I make a request to place a sign that says "Karaoke Night" would you expect better?
By the middle of next year or during the summer let’s see if your perceptions are still the same after giving the place a chance to change the image of a previous bad experience. Stay opened minded and unbiased as a Laplace people. That may help your little Parish go along way in itself. "

" I know of a shooting at the Daquiri shop on airline next to walgreens there was even a murder at the Daquiri shop next to the walgreens on airline. Did anyone comment to close that place down. Then there was a bad beating at Rustys pool room and so forth. Are we sure were not just targeting this place. as a media outlet and the public. "

" I was at another bar the night the first shoting happened and the cops had the men in cuffs and did not arrest anyone so where is the justice in that and has far has cops, when a bar calls for police they come in droves like 5 or 6 cars at a time and EMS if you call them, there a fight at a local bar and the cops where there in no time. I don't live in Laplace anymore but I would move back if I could "

" We had the opportunity to make changes in the Corruption of this Parish's Sheriffs Dept. But some (NOT ME!!!) refused to vote for anyone but Wayne Jones. And now You see where it has gotten you. How many shootings, harrasment complaints, thefts and domestics is it gonna take before people realize we need change in this Parish. Some of us relized it almost 10-11 years ago. Even more of us realized it during the next election. But it wasn't enough to make a change. Maybe one day the change will take place, I just hope it isn't to late to salvage what used to be a wonderful Parish to raise your family in. "

Rights wrote on Feb 7, 2010 12:44 PM:

" It's not the club or the club owners fault. The blame should fall on the trigger man himself. The man obviously intended on hurting someone and succeeded. It's not the fault of the police or anyone else. To place blame elsewhere excuses the trigger man and makes this type of behaviour socialy acceptable. The trigger man made a choice and it seems that we all make excuses for him. "
