A tale of two schools

St. Charles Borromeo Middle School students celebrated a special Mass at St. Peter Claver School in downtown New Orleans dedicated to children. The two school learned about a culture different from theirs and shared in a liturgy full of dancing, drum music and prayer. The Mass included special petitions for children near home and throughout the world. After Mass, students enjoyed lunch together in the school cafeteria, where they played trivia games in honor of school lunch week.

Today, Americans are celebrating Veterans Day, a legal holiday honoring all veterans of the Armed Forces. It’s a time to not only remember our veterans but also to thank them for their unselfish service, protecting the freedoms we so often take for granted.

Students are teaming up against drugs at Mimosa Park Elementary

A colorful show of support
East St. John Elementary students, teachers and staff wear brightly colored red T-shirts to support the troops. “Red Shirt Friday” is known across the nation as a symbol of strength and unity for our U.S. military troops. Assistant Principal Linda King spearheaded the awareness to support our troops after her son-in-law, SFC Christian Gansemer, was sent to serve in Iraq. Over 150 shirts were worn after the tragic military loss from Fort Hood in Texas. Here, a group of students stand under the flag in front of the school. ESJE plans to continue their military support with student letters to the soldiers, cards and care packages.

Destrehan Plantation Fall Festival brings locals out during this past, beautiful weekend. With several different kinds of booths, ranging from pottery to Louisiana cruisine and antiques from all over the state.

SJA collects footwear
St. Joan of Arc Catholic School fourth-grade Mission Club members began collecting new shoes, socks and shoe laces for the Shoes for Orphan Souls. This program provides new shoes and socks to orphans and at-risk children in the United States and throughout the world.

RPCC students donate money and time
SORRENTO —In the past two and a half months, River Parishes Community College students have raised more than $1,600 and have coordinated donations for RPCC campus improvements and for children in River Parishes communities.

Spreading the word about the wetlands
The Hurst Middle Wetland Watchers Service-Learning Group and the Destrehan High WISE (Wetlands Interested in Saving the Environment) Club teamed up to share their knowledge with over 3,000 students and teachers from the Greater Baton Rouge area at the LSU Sea Grant Ocean Commotion event held at the Pete Maravich Center.

The Pledge of Allegiance ends with “one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all. The word “justice” confused me this week when I heard the news that William Jefferson will be a free man until all his appeals are exhausted.

United Way of St. Charles receives prestigious certification
LULING — United Way of St. Charles received the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations Seal of Excellence at the Standards for Excellence Award Ceremony in Baton Rouge on Oct. 21.

So much to be thankful for
Here we are on the brink of another Thanksgiving. Before getting busy with the shopping, cooking and eating that usually accompany this holiday, I wanted to create a list of all the things for which I am thanking God. It didn’t take long before I realized that this list would be complete with just three items.
