Six complete the LELI
Six administrators in St. John the Baptist Parish successfully completed the Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction Program (LELI): Alison Cupit (LaPlace Elementary School principal), Stacey Bradford (West St. John High School assistant principal), Bonnie Dinvaut (coordinator of educational technology), Genevieve Gomez (East St. John Elementary School assistant principal), Zina Jones (Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School assistant principal), Lanette Perrin (coordinator of Instruction and professional development) and Kendria Spears (Fifth Ward Elementary School principal).
Wetland Watchers receive Brown Foundation Grant Award
Recently, 35 Hurst students were presented a grant for $3335 to purchase materials in support of the Hurst Wetland Watchers Project at the Joe and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation Service-Learning Grant Kick-off Celebration. Hurst students were able to share their knowledge with over 1100 students representing nine parishes.
Remembering the past can be an adventure
I looked forward to spending time with my Mom, Aunt Judy and cousin Tommye Lou. Now that would have been fun in itself but add old photographs and a bowl of my Mom’s chicken salad, and we were content to sit around the kitchen table all day.
Congressman Scalise visits Harry Hurst Middle
Recently, U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise visited the Harry Hurst Middle Library on behalf of the U.S. Congress and the National Endowment for Humanities. As one of thousands of libraries around the country whom received the “Picturing America” Bookshelf, Hurst received 17 hardcover books and 20 pieces of laminated art reproductions with the theme of “We the People.” Through the Picturing America initiative, the NEH aims to tell the story of America through its art. The program seeks to introduce Americans to their artistic heritage and inspire them to become more informed citizens.

In May 2007, I had the opportunity to spend Memorial Day in Washington, D.C. The three-day experience was exciting, but the highlight of the trip was meeting a veteran from Levittown, Pa. He was 87-years-old Master Sergeant Albert Ludwig (retired).
Students earn high school and college credits at the same time
RESERVE - Students enrolled in Louisiana high schools can dual enroll at Louisiana Technical College (LTC) Campuses. Students who dual enroll receive both high school elective credit and technical college credit at the same time. These students take LTC courses during their regular school day. West St. John High School students travel by bus from the school to the campus in the morning. They take two classes at LTC and then return to WSJHS for two classes in the afternoon. East St. John High School students attend classes at ESJHS in the morning and travel by bus to the LTC in the afternoon.
