Sports Q & A

West St. John always seems to boast a respected defensive team, one of the top units in Class 1A. That’s again true in 2009, and Chris Gauthier is one of the reasons why.

The Rams’ senior cornerback is entrusted by West St. John coach Robert Valdez to routinely go against the opposition’s top wide receiver, one on one. More often than not, Gauthier wins his battles.

“We look to him as a lockdown corner,” said Valdez. “We put him out there, and either he’s going to go get it, or they will. But we like his odds. He’s very talented.”

Valdez points to his consistency as a key reason why he’s entrusted him to cover top level receivers like St. James’ Alonzo Lewis and West Jefferson’s Glenn Coleman.

“He’s steady. Chris is like a glass of wine,” said Valdez. “He’s real smooth, but he’ll sneak up on you. He won’t make many mistakes.

“He’s definitely a kid you want to coach. I foresee that he’ll become a real success story.”
