St. Charles Catholic’s D.J. Wesley was one of the driving forces behind the Comets run to the Class 3A state championship game this past season. Last week, he ensured that his senior campaign in 2009 wouldn’t be his last on the baseball diamond.

Wesley officially committed to Southern University last week, where he will continue his education and athletic career.

“I’m just very excited,” said Wesley. “How many kids can say they’ve been offered the chance to play Division I baseball? It’s such a great opportunity.” Wesley, who played right field for the Comets, was one of the team’s top offensive threats in 2009.

He hit .359, with eight doubles and 28 RBIs in the middle of the Comet order.

SCC coach Paul Waguespack says that Wesley provided tremendous leadership to his team, especially by example.

“He’s a hard worker,” said Waguespack. “Any shortcomings he’s had he’s worked on and turned into positives in his game. And now he’s turned himself into a baseball player who’s going to play at the next level.”

Wesley’s father, Darryl, said that his son’s decision finally put to rest what’s been a hectic time for their family.

“He had a couple of other offers. But he didn’t really want to go out of state,” he said. “He finally got it worked out last week.

“I’m just excited to see him have that opportunity to play at the next level and continue his education. He has the ability, it’s just a matter of getting the opportunity to show it. It’s huge.”

As a matter of fact, the decision was based primarily on opportunity, D.J. Wesley said.

“They told me that if I work hard, I’ve got a shot to play or even start,” he said.

“Plus it’s a chance for me to stay close to my family.”

Now officially a college bound player, he says the feeling hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“It’ll hit me once I step on the field,” he said.
