T-shirt causes festival ruckus

LAPLACE – The St. John Sheriff’s Office sent a message on Saturday to fair-goers that the Andouille Festival will remain a family affair.

One fair-goer showed up on Saturday wearing a vulgar T-shirt with the “f” word being used, and promoting the use of marijuana.

It didn’t take St. John deputies long to get a complaint about the shirt, which was very visible to the many children at the fair. They quickly corralled the man and made it clear that either the shirt had to go, or he would go.

Fortunately, deputies reported there was no incident as the man turned his shirt inside out so the words couldn’t be viewed.

Handling the complaint were Col. Michael Boudreaux, and Deputies Jake Boudreaux and Brandon Mabile.

Every family man and woman I know is sick and tired of the rap music blaring the F word down every street in the neighberhood while a bunch of thugs ride around smoking dope, stealing and causing trouble everywhere they go. We need laws to keep some issues at bay. otherwise we will have complete anarchy. Look what happened in New Orleans after Katrina when there were no cops to patrol and keep the peace. Is that what you want all the time, everywhere? Because if it is then you are also part of the problem.
Putting people in jail for every little mistake they make is unreasonable. Its hard to get a job with a criminal record these days. Lets not raise the unemployment rate for nonesense stuff. People gotta eat ya know? "

There are places where this behavior is tolerated and it should never be in the presence of children (mine or yours) or in public in the presence of decent citizens.(wives, daughters, etc.
If you like it, keep it, don't impose it on us; the same goes for boomboxes. "

" First of all, walmart does NOT serve the public. The public serves walmart. How can you say otherwise when, during these hard financial times Wal-Mart said earnings for the third quarter rose 9.8% while sales rose 7.5%?

Secondly, get real, your opinions are what defines "extremist". (Have you ever heard that word used somewhere else? YEAH, that's what I'm comparing you to.) You are right; public profanity and free speech are different. But, they are both different parts of the same beautiful thing. But it doesn't matter! I as an American, love my right to free speech. If I choose to use profanity, I will use profanity. And well, if it's in Wal-Mart, so be it. If you don't like it, oh well.

When you are out in public, there is no expectation of privacy. You are exposed to other people and the real world.

People that think like that are the same ones that begin supporting other freedoms being taken away. Soon we won't be able to criticize our dear old president or the big ol' government. After that anything that makes people like you "unhappy" will be illegal too.

Do you really say that anytime someone uses the f-word we should put them in jail for a week?!? What about use on the internet? How would you handle that? Maybe FORCE people to use their real names on comments like those here on the paper? That way the gov't can know who says what and arrest and "make them disssapear" if they say something wrong? Wait, that's exactly what they do in Xiamen, China! (Under the Commnunist Gov't)

You may say that I'm taking an "extremist" view to your opinions. If other people begin to think like you, then we all begin down this slippery slope that began with your opinions of a t shirt and ends with complete censorship of thoughts, words, and opinions.

And to that I guess I'll have to say "Da Comrade" because we're not in Kansas anymore. "

" Your choice to disagree is noted.
What I want is a law passed with some teeth. Wal-mart serves the public.
Freedom of speech and public profanity are not the same thing. Unless you are in the privacy of your home, if there are any strangers around you, you are exposing yourself to the public.
If I chose to urinate in wal-mart's aisle, I think you would agree it's in public.
A week in jail for a crime is a just punishment. There are too many crimes that go unpunished. All this does is lead the criminals to expect they can get away with more and more. "

    " To "get real"

I wouldn't actually agree with you when you say " make the f-word punishable by mandatory 1 week in jail.(written or spoken)" If I am in Wal-Mart and I use the "F" word and you hear me...I don't deserve to spend 1 week in jail..that's freedom of speech. Now what could have been done or should have been done is immediately removed him from the grounds. I would think that's more appropriate than sending one to jail for a week. Expecially if i'm in Wal-Mart and I use the word. I shouldn't deserve to go to jail for a right that I have as a citizen. True, it is in a public place but Wally World is a private company, therefore, it should be left up to the discretion of the store manager to tone me down or put me off the premises.

I TOTALLY agree 100% with the pants sagging. That's ridiculous and VERY disrespectful!!! "
