First responders from Acadian Ambulance and the LaPlace Volunteer Fire Department work to stabilize the driver of a utility truck involved in two-vehicle wreck on US Highway 51 in LaPlace Thursday morning that injured three people.

According to a report from Louisiana State Police, the driver of the utility truck, owned by Atmos Energy, was traveling northbound on US 51 in the left lane when a Ford F-350 pickup, owned by a parking lot maintenance company from Hammond, failed to yield and turned from the center lane into the path of the utility truck.

Leandro Amayn of St. Rose, the driver and sole occupant of the utility truck, was transported to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace with minor injuries. Also injured in the accident were Robert Lyster and Tikeith Smith, two of three passengers of the F-350. The men were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The accident, which occurred just after 8 a.m. Thursday, tied up traffic on US 51 for about an hour while firefighters and state police worked to clear the vehicles from the roadway. (Staff photo by Robin Shannon)
