St. Peter Chanel brings in ‘Traveling Mary’ to promote prayer
Fr. Jason Palermo blesses the statues of Mary that students of St. Peter Chanel will be taking home to promote prayer in their homes. Each class has a “Traveling Mary” that will be sent home to each family to encourage family prayer.

Teacher receives learning grant
Hahnville High School teacher Mrs. Deborah S. Unger recently received a $3,000 Service Learning Grant from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation. Through her “Adolescents Advocate Literacy” project, Mrs. Unger and the students in her gifted English classes will promote reading at Hahnville High, at numerous St. Charles Parish elementary schools, and within the St. Charles Parish community at large.
River Parishes Hospital names monthly art winners
River Parishes Hospital is proud to announce its monthly art winners for the months of June, July and August. The June winners are: Kanjarnee Dunlap, a student at Fifth Ward Elementary School, and Elena Marino and Robin Mizell, who were students at Norco 4-6 Elementary School. Winners for July are: Jermond Stewart, a student at LaPlace Elementary School, and Kali Zeller and Victoria Vicknair, students at Paulina Elementary School. August winners are: Karen Trichell, a participant at Ascension of Our Lord Adventure Week Camp, and Megan Christy and Kiera Burke, participants at Ascension of Our Lord Kid Camp.
Hurst Middle School receives notable grant
Hurst Middle School received $7,342 through grants from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation to fund school service-learning projects performed by the Hurst LaBranche Wetland Watchers, the Hurst HOSTS Program, and the Hurst Beta Club. Students and teachers were able to attend the Brown Foundation Service-Learning Celebration which involved about 900 students and teachers from nine parishes.
Ascension of Our Lord names student council officers
Student Council officers and class representatives were recently elected at Ascension of Our Lord School for the 2008-2009 school year. Students chosen to the board are: Austin Matherne – President, Hilary Ruiz – Vice President, Katelynn Hood – Secretary and Hope Madere – Treasurer.
Destrehan lends a helping hand to Youth Summit
Destrehan High School students Warren Moore, Sean Ortiz, Cambrey Dent, Adam Songy, Whitney Thibodeaux, and Renee Walsh, Harry Hurst student, Cindy Ladner, and JB Martin student, Nicholas Guillot, represented St. Charles Parish at the Audubon Institute’s Louisiana Youth Environmental Summit.
