Sun Villa honors 2008 Sharks squad
The Sun Villa Sharks recently held their swim banquet at Sun Villa Country Club in Norco. All swimmers were honored for their hard work and dedication. Each swimmer received a gift in appreciation for those efforts, as well as high point trophies for those who scored the most points in their age groups during the 1008 season.

Former Tiger Fowles scores 18 in Team USA victory over China
BEIJING -- Former LSU All-American center Sylvia Fowles scored 18 points, and Team USA used a 23-0 first-quarter run to put away host China, 108-63, at the 2008 Olympics on Monday night at Wukesong Arena.

Knights travel team ends season with bang, wins fifth tournament
The LA Knights, a St. Charles Parish 9U travel team, ended their 2008 season with a 1st place win at the Orange Grove Classic in Gulfport, MS.  The team played in 14 tournaments this year.  Throughout the season the Knights won five first place awards, two second place awards, and four third awards.  Pictured left to right.  First row: Carter Norman and Cullen Ballard.  Second row: Zachary Rankin, Waylon LeBlanc, Caleb Joyce, Austin Perrin, Logan Robicheaux, and Cade Miguez.  Third row: Josh Genovese, Chandler Fremen, Mikey Kinler, and Hunter Johnson.  Last row: Coach Eddie Fremen, John Joyce, and Roger Rankin.  Not pictured: Coach Tim Perrin.

East, Doming honored at Larayo annual awards ceremony
On July 14, Larayo held its annual awards ceremony. Among those honored were Barracuda swimmers Ben East and Nicole Doming. East recieved the Ray Laiche Memorial award, while Doming was awarded the Charmain Faucheux memorial award.

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University football team held its first two-a-day practice of preseason camp on Thursday at the Westfeldt Practice Facility and both halves could not have been more different from each other.

Wave picks up tempo as camp hits day 11
NEW ORLEANS – The scene early Monday morning at the Westfield Practice Facility was one of peace and serenity. Following a light rain in the New Orleans area, the scene was almost something out of Thoreau’s Walden as the sun crept across the turf and the sounds of birds chirping and dogs barking echoed from the distance.

Comets 7-on-7 team goes undefeated
The St. Charles Catholic High School Comets Boys Soccer team participated in the 2008 Baton Rouge 7-on-7 High School Summer League. The Comets played a league schedule of 6 games on Sunday evenings and went undefeated. The Comets entered the single elimination tournament as the #2 seed and continued their league domination by winning 3 games, which included a 3-2 sudden death overtime win over Dutchtown in the semis and a solid 2-0 win in the finals against a strong East Ascension team. The team’s work paid off as it was crowned the 2008 7 v 7League Division 3 Champions.

HAMMOND – After two days of working out in nearly perfect conditions, the Southeastern Louisiana University football team battled the August heat and humidity for the second consecutive day in preparation for its Aug. 30 opener at Alcorn State.

Comets learn from the champs at Manning Passing Academy
Last month, St. Charles football coach Frank Monica and his Comets team took part in the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls State. Above, Monica (middle)  poses with two of the (very well known) hosts, Eli (left) and Peyton Manning. The Super Bowl winning brothers sponsor the camp annually along with the rest of the Manning family  and teach football fundamentals, particularly at the offensive skill positions.

Wave’s Gelhardt named to ‘good works’ team
NEW ORLEANS, La.–While members of the 2008 Tulane University football team were merely arriving on campus in preparation for preseason camp on Thursday, senior deep snapper Craig Gelhardt became the Green Wave student-athlete to receive individual honors this year as the Tallahassee, Fla., native was named to the 17th Annual Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

BATON ROUGE -- Day three of preseason camp had LSU putting on shoulder pads as the Tigers worked out in shells with a pair of split-squad practices here Wednesday at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

Hornets announce 2008-09 schedule
New Orleans - The New Orleans Hornets will open the 2008-09 regular season on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 29, when they take on the Golden State Warriors. The Hornets will battle Shaquille O’Neal, Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns on the road the following night on Thursday, Oct. 30 in a nationally televised game on TNT. The Hornets first home game comes on Saturday, Nov. 1 against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
