The United Way of St. Charles has completed its 2007-08 Annual Campaign, and once again, the community has responded in fine fashion by committing pledges and receipts totaling $2,378,034.35. Although the total fell slightly short of the 2.5 million goal, it represents an increase over last year’s total. Also included in this figure are pledges to other United Way organizations, made by employees working in St. Charles Parish but living in surrounding parishes.

NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District Commander, Col. Alvin Lee, has signed the decision record for an environmental document confirming that the Corps will improve the West Return Floodwall by building a new concrete T-wall parallel to the existing floodwall.

SUV flips on Belle Terre
LAPLACE – Louisiana State Troopers and LaPlace firefighters investigated the scene of a two-car accident at the intersection of Belle Terre Boulevard and Fairway Drive Thursday evening. According to troopers on the scene, the black Honda CRV, driven by 17-year-old Alayna Bernard was turning south onto Belle Terre when it collided with a grey Mercury Marquis driven by 52-year-old Bruce Sanders. Both Sanders and Bernard were transported to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace with minor injuries. The accident is still under investigation, and it is not known whether Bernard had the right of way to turn onto Belle Terre at the time of the accident. Staff photos by Kevin Chiri.

St. James scholar adds to St. John family resources
Cynthia Lewis Clifton, a native of St. James Parish, is currently the Associate Extension Agent FCS for St. John Parish. Her focus is in the areas of child and family development, family resource management and nutrition and health.  Her job allows her to interact with agencies, organizations and groups to strengthen areas of cooperation in the parish.
