Delphine Flynn, of LaPlace, recently resigned as treasurer for St. Joan of Arc Thrift Shop after serving nearly 35 years in the office. “I began when the thrift shop was in the old Boy Scout hut behind the original St. Joan of Arc church in 1974,” Flynn said. “I believe we make a difference in the community because there is a need for inexpensive clothing and household goods, and the profits we make go back into the community.” Flynn said she will remain an active member.

Thrift shop volunteers meet each quarter to choose local organizations to receive donations. In addition to ten local non-profit agencies, special donations were made to St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, and the Veteran’s Home in Reserve for use as needed.

Emma Gilmore is the new treasurer. She announced that the thrift shop donated 14 prom dresses from their stock, cleaned by Stein’s cleaners, to East St. John High School students. The thrift shop also donated $100 towards the cost of a limousine to take the students to their prom in Kenner. Juliette Maquar, president and founding member of the group since 1971, asked volunteers to encourage their friends to join. “A lot of us are getting old and we are losing volunteers,” she said.

The thrift shop on Fir Street in LaPlace is open on Mondays and Fridays from 9 12 p.m.
