River Parishes Hospital has announced the addition of Interventional Radiology to its array of state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services. With the addition of Chad Aultman, M.D., Robert Burris, M.D., and James Fletcher, M.D., Interventional Radiologists, the following interventional procedures can now be performed at River Parishes Hospital, including but not limited to diagnostic peripheral angiography, peripheral intervention, balloon angioplasty, stents, dialysis graft declots, Greenfield filters, needle biopsies and porta cath placements.

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive treatments performed using imaging guidance. They are board certified radiologists that are fellowship trained in percutaneous (through the skin) interventions. Their specialized training is certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Radiologists use imaging techniques such as angiography, x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and computed tomography to diagnose a disease. Interventional radiologists use their expertise in reading these medical images to guide small instruments such as catheters through the blood vessels or other pathways to treat the disease through the skin. These procedures often replace open surgical procedures and are generally easier for the patient because they involve no large incisions, producing less risk, less pain and shorter recovery times. Most interventional procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay, and can usually be performed with minimal anesthesia.
