LAPLACE - St. John Parish officials are issuing a reminder to political candidates that a parish ordinance prohibits political signs being erected until 90 days before the election.

The primary for the parish elections this fall is not until October 20, meaning no signs should be put up until July 20.

The parish ordinance does not apply to billboards.

“We are already getting phone calls from people complaining about the political signs showing up in yards and on streets,” Councilman Sean Roussel said.

The parish ordinance was passed in 2004 after that election season that was an active one.

“We had people complaining after that and we immediately passed an ordinance to govern how soon these signs can go up,” he added. “Ninety days should be plenty of time for candidates to have their signs up.”
