Suspects fled after shooting man in the chest twice, victim manages to call police for help

LAPLACE - Two men reportedly shot a LaPlace man twice near the chest with a 9mm pistol Tuesday night, and as the men fled, the bloodied man found the strength to escape into his home to call police as agonizing pain roared through his senses.

Officers were unable to track down either of the shooters, whom the gunshot victim said he didn't know, but police found four 9mm shell casings at the scene of the incident that may aid their investigation.

The incident started at 8:30 p.m., when two men allegedly approached Cameron Carter, 22, of 1949 Williamsburg Dr. in LaPlace, while he sat in a chair in his driveway and one of men pulled out a pistol and started firing.

Two bullets ripped into Carter's upper right abdomen and another tore through his garage door and struck a file cabinet, of at least four shots that were fired.

The alleged shooters sprinted towards Yorktown Drive as Carter ran into his house and called police, who arrived at the scene and drove Carter to River Parishes Hospital for treatment.

The two men wore black pants, black shirts and red rags over their heads, according to Carter's statement to the St. John Sheriff's Office.
