LAPLACE - A 9-year-old LaPlace boy was run over by a golf cart Monday and dragged for some distance before the 8-year-old driver could stop it.

Capt. Michael Tregre of the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office said the boy was one of three boys riding in the cargo area of a golf cart, being driven by an 8-year-old girl with an 11-year-old female passenger.

In the 700 block of Aline Street at 5:26 p.m., the victim got off the rear of the cart to pick up something from the street. The cart then backed over him and dragged him for an unknown distance.

Adults ran to the scene and lefted the cart off the trapped boy. He was taken first to River Parishes Hospital and then to Children's Hospital, with massive head trauma, a broken arm and collarbone and severe brusises over most of his body.

The matter remains under investigation.
