Keller: Don’t confuse ‘meekness’ & ‘weakness’

I’ve shared a few times that as a regular church member, I was religious, but never read the Bible.

That all changed on the second Sunday in October of 1980 when I had a spiritual experience with Jesus Christ.

The Bible then became a part of my life as I now allow God to speak to me through His Inspired Word.

A few weeks ago, I heard a message that challenged me when the minister said, “If you really want to know Jesus, read the Book of Matthew, chapter 5, referred to as the Sermon on the Mount.”

In verse 5 of that chapter Jesus said: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

That word “meek” got my attention and I wanted to know what Jesus really meant. I sometimes considered meekness as a weakness.

After looking in the Webster’s dictionary, I realized how people could be confused. It describes “meek” as being gentle, patient and mild, not inclined to anger or resentment. That’s what Jesus taught.

The negative of the same word describes it as too submissive, easily imposed on, spineless, spiritless. In the secular world, it means being weak.

Jesus was talking to the multitudes and challenged them to have a character like His.

Meekness really is humility and gratitude.

I read recently that God has two dwellings: one in Heaven and the other in a meek and thankful heart.

My prayer for my family is for God to bless us with meekness.
