RESERVE — East St. John High School’s boy basketball coach Yussef Jasmine is travelling.

The longtime coach of the Wildcats confirmed that he has resigned from East St. John to become the head boys basketball coach at Hahnville High School.

“It was a tough decision,” Jasmine said. “I just feel like this is the best decision for me and my family.”

Jasmine has spent his entire coaching career at East St. John, beginning as an assistant under Charles Julien. He became the head coach of the Wildcats in 2007.

Over the last 10 years Jasmine led his teams to several milestones, including the first outright district championship in 2009. The team’s 24 wins in 2012 were the most in school history. The Wildcats reached the Class 5A semifinals in 2005.

East St. John finished 17-15 in 2017.

“Thirteen years, that’s my entire career,” Jasmine said. “I’ve been through principals, coaches, athletic directors. I look at all the kids I’ve coached. It was tough telling the kids. I told them this is probably harder on me than it will be on them.”

Jasmine, who played at Loyola University New Orleans from 1997-2000 and is in the Loyola Hall of Fame, joins former teammate Brian Lumar, who was recently named principal at Hahnville High.
