LAPLACE — With a desire to see others succeed and further their education, one local man is doing what he can to help all types of students.

All Star Electric CEO Todd Trosclair said the awards pictured were given to the company for its efforts working with high school students.

All Star Electric CEO Todd Trosclair said the awards pictured were given to the company for its efforts working with high school students.

Most recently All Star Electric CEO Todd Trosclair gave two scholarships to St. Charles Catholic High School students.

The CEO went to St. Charles Borromeo High School in Destrehan, which was moved to LaPlace and renamed St. Charles Catholic.

Trosclair said he told the school how much being a part of sports teams and the school, in general, made a positive impact on his life, and he wanted to give something back.

“I wanted to try to encourage people and reward kids that take the time to participate in extracurricular activities in school,” Trosclair said. “That’s why we came up with the idea for a scholarship for kids. Giving back to my alma mater means a lot to me. I learned a lot about team work and being part of a team.”

The donor said many of his employees graduated from St. Charles Borromeo, and the scholarship program is a way for them to give back.

This is the second year Trosclair has given two students $1,000 each as part of the All Star Foundation Scholarship.

Trosclair said only 15 students applied for the scholarship last year, adding more than 40 applied this year.

“We don’t do it for any notoriety,” Trosclair said. “We just do it because we are successful and like helping others. We want people to know that All Star thinks that education is a part of being a success.”

Courtney Millet, director of instruction and institutional advancement for SCC, said the money goes toward the students’ St. Charles Catholic tuition. Applicants must be current students at St. Charles Catholic and have completed at least one full semester at the school.

“This scholarship is a way for Mr. Trosclair to assist active, hard-working and involved students with their high school tuition,” Millet said. “Mr. Trosclair does many things for our entire community; however, this scholarship is specific to St. Charles High School.”

The winners of the scholarship this year were junior Alex Miller and senior Lela Hill.

“Both Alex and Lela are great student athletes,” Millet said. “They perform both in the classroom and on the field. They both maintain great grades and a positive attitude.”

Another way All Star Electric helps local students is through a work-training program.

“We take high school seniors that want to go to school and we help them through the carrier program we are doing with Associated Business and Contractors,” Trosclair said. “We do it with St. Charles and St. John Parish students.”

Students learn the business by attending after-school classes, which are going on now, focusing on the electrical trade. Once the course is complete, students are eligible to apply for employment at All Star or anywhere else.

Trosclair and All Star Electric also help students in Orleans Parish through the Stay in School Program, which has been active for 10 years. Seniors in the parish with perfect attendance have their names put into a drawing for a chance to win a car.

Trosclair said he knows the only way students can get a head is by applying themselves and studying in school.

“I try to stress the importance of education, whether it is trade school, college or whatever,” Trosclair said.

“It’s the people that apply themselves. Those are the people that are going to get ahead in life.”
