LaPlace strikes with bowling alley news

Two months ago in this space, L’OBSERVATEUR pointed out a community the size of greater LaPlace, which routinely draws in neighbors from parishes on all sides, deserves basic entertainment options.

Local residents should be able to take for granted quality parks, movie theater choices and a bowling alley.

St. John Government was lauded for breaking ground in 2015 on more than $2 million in enhancements to parks and recreational spaces all over St. John the Baptist Parish — an effort that should be complete this year.

The good news was buoyed in late 2015 when Parish President Natalie Robottom teamed with Riverlands Shopping Center managing partners and Acadiana Cinemas owners to announce the opening of a renovated movie theater in LaPlace — slated for April.

Officials for Acadiana Cinemas, which has locations in Opelousas, Natchitoches, Picayune, Miss., and Eunice, told L’OBSERVATEUR that LaPlace is the perfect market to invest in because the company renovates older theaters that are outdated by modern standards.

Well, the parish may go three for three if those projects come to fruition this calendar year and the bowling alley on Cambridge Drive in LaPlace is revived and renovated.

Torri Buckles, the Parish’s director of economic development, recently told St. John the Baptist Parish Council members there are people interested in the building.

She said negotiations are underway for the bowling alley’s purchase.

The building has been closed for at least eight years, meaning there has been less entertainment spots for residents to enjoy.

Councilman Larry Snyder said the location at 947 Cambridge Drive is an eyesore, and he is excited about the possibility of the building being used once again.

It’s important we have something for families, and parks, a movie theater and a bowling alley are great places to start.
