LAPLACE — Shoppers in St. John the Baptist Parish can expect some savings this weekend.

Thanks to Louisiana’s Annual Sales Tax Holiday, the state is exempting its 4 percent sales tax from 12:01 a.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

St. John the Baptist Parish officials doubled down on the commerce booster by exempting the parish’s 5 percent local sales tax during the same period.

The savings are good on the first $2,500 of the purchase price of tangible personal property for non-business use.

The Sales Tax Holiday is also pairing with another local promotion, “Shop Local, Shop St. John,” which continues through Saturday and coincides with Back-to-School season.

Patrons who visit one of the more than 50 participating businesses — they are listed at the bottom of this page and at sjbparish.com — can enter for a chance to win a prize.

As for Louisiana’s Annual Sales Tax Holiday, the state exemption applies statewide to all consumer purchases of tangible personal property other than vehicles subject to license and title and meals furnished for consumption on the premises where purchased.

According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, items not eligible for the exemption include purchases for hotel occupancy, amusement, recreational, and athletic admissions, repairs to tangible personal property, laundry, cleaning, pressing and dyeing services and vehicle parking.
